Synopsis
Sammy, Rosie, Frankie and Taylor - the ‘Questers’ - are teenage girls just entering high school who play Quest every night, a tabletop roleplaying game where they pretend to be fighters and wizards to escape from real life. But Frankie (the Quest Master) gets tired of them avoiding their problems and gives them real-life quests: Sammy has to ask Michael to the dance, Rosie has to sing a song at the Talent Show, and Taylor (who harbours a secret about her sexuality) has to finally open up. Rosie signs up for the Talent Show but runs off stage when the big moment arrives; Taylor is asked if she has a crush on a girl but denies it; and Sammy asks Michael to the dance but is told she has to dump the other Questers as friends if she wants to go with him. Finally at the school dance, their friendship in tatters, Taylor admits that she likes girls and Rosie gets up and sings a song that convinces Sammy to dump Michael and re-establish their friendship. Frankie congratulates them for completing their quests - and growing up.

Characters
Note: All characters are high school students.
The pronoun “they” is used for roles that are suitable for any gender.
Sammy
It’s the first day of high school, and Sammy — a bookish, indecisive Grade 9 student — is thinking maybe it’s time to grow up. But what does that even mean? Sammy’s safe place has always been the table-top role-playing game ‘Quest’, which she plays with her friends Rosie, Frankie, and Taylor — but high school will force her to make hard choices between the safety of the game and the uncertainty of growing up.
Gender: female Vocal Type: soprano/belter

Rosie
Rosie’s a budding songwriter and an introvert — she’s much more comfortable playing Quest with her friends than performing on a stage, but high school will push her out of her comfort zone. Rosie is empathetic and extremely loyal, with a cheeky sense of humour.
Gender: female Vocal Type: mezzo/belter

Frankie
Frankie is the “Quest Master”, meaning she creates and controls the world within the game. But this level of control has gone to Frankie’s head: she’s slightly addicted to power even outside the game.
Gender: female Vocal Type: mezzo/belter
Taylor
When she’s playing “Quest” with her friends, Taylor gets to pretend to be someone else — which she much prefers to being herself. Even though she knows she’s loved and supported by her friends, she’s always careful to never let an uncomfortable fact about herself slip out.
Gender: female Vocal Type: soprano/belter

Emma
Emma is the ‘announcements girl’ who is heard over the school PA every morning. She’s friendly, popular and charismatic, and although this might make some people think she’s superficial, she’s actually very compassionate and quick to help her fellow students.
Gender: female Vocal Type: soprano/belter

Michael
Michael is the natural leader of his group of geeks (Jesse, Josh and Jacob) because, unlike them, he actually has the confidence to talk to girls. He and his geek friends got bullied mercilessly in middle school, so Michael has decided that their survival in high school depends on figuring out the rules and sticking to them no matter what.
Gender: male Vocal Type: baritone/tenor

Josh
Josh is too unathletic to be a jock, but not quite smart enough to be cool with the geeks. What he does have is a strong sense of idealism and romance (he sends anonymous cards to five girls every Valentine’s Day), and even though he doesn’t think of himself as a hero, his sense of justice sometimes pushes him to do very brave things.
Gender: male Vocal Type: tenor

Jesse
Jesse is an intellectually arrogant and slightly snobby geek —but their confidence evaporates though when they talk to someone other than their geek friends, especially someone they’re attracted to. Jesse spends a lot of time thinking about how geeks can survive high school.
Gender: any gender Vocal Type: medium voice

Jacob
Jacob is smart and knowledgeable like Jesse, but he tries to be less snobby about it. He also tries to reign in Jesse’s snobbishness a little. Jacob shares the geek fear of talking to strangers, but is more hopeful than Jesse that one day it’ll actually happen.
Gender: male Vocal Type: baritone/tenor

Doug
Doug is the President of the Dork-Dweeb Alliance, and the iron-fisted ruler of the school’s “Nerdverse”. Doug’s dweebish manner and false modesty hide the fact that he’s a shrewd political operator with big ambitions, and willing to be ruthless when the need arises.
Gender: male Vocal Type: tenor

Dani
Dani is a budding songwriter with perhaps more enthusiasm than talent. [Note: Dani can be double-cast with Jesse or Jacob.]
Gender: any gender Vocal Type: any voice type

Ensemble
various high school students, members of the Cheer Team, jocks, various characters inside the Quest gaming world (goblins, orcs, ogres, monsters, etc.)
Genders: all genders Vocal Types: all voice types
